Board settings and administration

Every tab of Edit Board Settings explained.

Written by Kendis Team

Everything that shapes your solution board lives in Edit Board Settings. Use this article as a reference: it takes you through the panel tab by tab.

The settings panel

Board Settings (top right) opens a panel with Edit Board Settings, Resync Board and the milestone switches: show solution increment bands on the timeline, show solution-level milestones, show PI-level milestones. The switches are saved as soon as you click them.

  • Edit Board Settings needs the Manage Board right.

  • Resync Board and the Content From ALM and Azure DevOps Projects tabs need the Add/Remove Content right.

  • Show Solution Increment Bands on Timeline also decides whether the board shows the solution iteration header row and whether Edit Board Settings has an Iterations tab.

The rights come from your role in the board's solution area or collection. See Manage solution areas, access and the Solution Boards page.

Configuration

Board name, prefix, and the terminology for parent / child / iteration / story, with card and text colours for parent and child cards.

Configuration tab.

Program Boards

Link, reorder, recolour or remove PI boards. See Link PI boards.

Iterations

Solution dates, auto-update, auto-fill and the iteration rows. The tab is shown while Show Solution Increment Bands on Timeline is on, and it uses your board's own word for iteration. See Iterations.

Content From ALM

Saved filters, JQL or WIQL queries that import capabilities from the Jira / ADO accounts of the linked PI boards. See Pull capabilities from Jira or Azure DevOps.

Azure DevOps Projects

Press Load Project to cache the ADO projects (queries, teams, iterations, work-item types and their icons) used by the linked boards. Do this once per new ADO project so that icons, state categories and queries resolve correctly.

Additional Settings

  • ALM Enable Dependencies: choose the ALM account and the link types that represent dependencies (they cannot be the parent / child link types).

  • Dependency Arrow: draw arrows from outward to inward or the reverse.

  • Capability Parent: the parent type of capabilities when the board is part of a larger hierarchy.

Create New Settings

Pick the Capability Type used by Create Capability and attach a Custom Field Layout to it. Both are saved as soon as you choose them.

Capability fields from Jira / Azure DevOps

Here you choose which extra fields of Jira or Azure DevOps Kendis brings in for your synced capabilities. You see them on the capability popup, and you can filter the board by them.

  1. Open Board Settings › Edit Board Settings › Create New Settings and scroll to Capability fields from Jira / Azure DevOps.

  2. Kendis shows one box per Jira or Azure DevOps account that has synced capabilities on this board, with the account name above it.

  3. Open a box and tick the fields you want for that account. Your choice is saved immediately.

  • Each tool keeps its own list. You can enable one set of fields for your Jira account and a different set for your Azure DevOps account on the same board.

  • Until a Jira or Azure DevOps capability is on the board, the section has no fields to pick.

  • On the capability popup the fields appear under Jira fields or Azure DevOps fields. The values shown are the last ones fetched; press the refresh button on that section to pull the latest values from the tool. Multi-value fields are shown as one comma-separated value.

  • The same fields become filters on the board. See Filter capabilities by Jira / Azure DevOps fields.

ⓘ Field values come with the sync

Kendis reads the values when a capability is imported and on every resync. After you tick a new field, the capabilities already on the board are updated in the background.

Frequently asked questions

Can Jira and Azure DevOps have different capability fields on one board?

Yes. Under Create New Settings every connected account has its own field list, so you choose the fields per tool.

Who can open Board Settings?

Every user except guests can open the Board Settings panel. Edit Board Settings needs the Manage Board right; Resync Board, Content From ALM and Azure DevOps Projects need Add/Remove Content. Without the right Kendis tells you that you are not allowed to perform the action.

Does Resync remove links I made manually?

No. Links made in Kendis between items of different tools are kept; links written into Jira / ADO are re-read from the tool.
